Limerick Cycling are seeking the production and maintenance of a Limerick Cycling map; this project is in conjunction with Limerick City Council, who will help with the printing of a hard copy version of the map; the on-line version is currently under development, see below:
The basic principle is one of route classification i.e. roads, or stretches of road are categorised according to the cycling proficiency needed to use them; no attempt is made to identify cycle lanes, carriageway type etc; this is in the interests of clarity
The objectives are: 1) to help current and potential cyclists in Limerick find and use viable cycle routes 2) identify the main impediments to the increased uptake of cycling in Limerick, hence the interventions with the greatest return
A four-level colour coded system is being used:
| Colour | Description | Detailed comments |
| Yellow | Safe for all cyclists | Safe from traffic or other hazards i.e. suitable for young children; this means off-road; the only routes in Limerick meeting this criteria are the river / canal paths |
| Green | Suitable for most cyclists | Applies to most suburban roads, and most roads that have cycling facilities; only applies to junctions that are simple or appropriately signalised, with pedestrian crossings; but never roundabouts |
| Blue | Experienced cyclists only | Applies to most busy urban roads, without cycle facilities e.g. most of the city centre; applies to complex signalised junctions and small roundabouts |
| Red | Hazardous | Reserved mostly for roundabouts, and some multi-lane urban roads; all such sections in the city are considered impediments to cycling and represent the top priority for intervention |
